Prompt Engineering: How to Talk to AI Tools
Why prompts matter
An AI tool answers the question it receives, not the one in your head. Vague prompts get generic answers; clear prompts get useful ones. Prompt engineering is simply the skill of asking well — and it improves every subject you study and every job you will do with AI.
The five-part formula
- Role — who should the AI act as? “You are a patient programming tutor…”
- Task — exactly what to do: explain, summarise, quiz, debug, compare
- Context — your level, your goal, your constraints: “I am a 3rd-semester student, exam next week”
- Format — bullet points, a table, 5 steps, 150 words, with an example
- Examples — show one sample of what good looks like when it matters
Before and after — see the difference
Weak: “Explain loops.” Strong: “You are a programming tutor. Explain for loops to a beginner who knows Python variables. Use one real-life example, then a 6-line Python example, then ask me one practice question. Keep it under 200 words.” The second prompt controls the level, the structure and the length — so the answer fits you.
Techniques that level you up
- Iterate — treat the first answer as a draft: “Make it simpler”, “Now give a harder example”
- Step by step — for problem solving, ask the AI to reason in numbered steps so you can check each one
- Ask for a quiz — “Ask me 5 questions, one at a time, and correct me” turns any chatbot into a tutor
- Set limits — “If you are unsure, say so” reduces confident guessing
- Verify — prompts improve answers, but facts still need checking for exams and professional work
Practice task (30 minutes)
Take one weak prompt you have actually used before. Rewrite it with all five parts of the formula, run both versions, and compare honestly: which answer would help you more in an exam or a project? Save your best prompts in a notes file — that file becomes a personal asset.
Role + task + context + format + examples. Prompting is not a trick — it is clear communication, and it is fast becoming a core professional skill.
